Unwritten Rules: Seeing the Invisible

Every community, workplace and family has its own set of Unwritten Rules. It could be considered an unspoken set of expectations that guide how we behave. These rules can be as simple as “don’t interrupt” or as complex as “this is how we handle conflict.” But here's the thing: because they’re rarely discussed, Unwritten Rules can create confusion or conflict when we cross them unknowingly.
In Universal Protective Behaviours training, we guide participants through a process of uncovering some unwritten rules in their own environments.

Identifying these expectations allows us to ask: Are these rules helpful? Are they fair? Do they allow everyone to feel safe? By shining a light on them, we bring them out into the open. By doing so, we can decide which rules to keep, which to challenge and how to develop healthier norms that promote inclusion and safety.
Recognising Unwritten Rules empowers individuals, teams, community groups and organisations to make conscious choices rather than simply following tradition. It also creates space for honest dialogue, where everyone can contribute to a culture that prioritises safety and respect.
✨ What unwritten rules are shaping your workplace or community right now? If it feels ok, share one in the comments, or if you prefer, reach out to explore how our training can support creating healthier norms.
